FAQ’s

Do I need any experience to start at Atos Jiu-Jitsu?

No, our Fundamentals and No Gi classes are for anyone starting out and you will be with plenty of others beginners as well.

Can I bring my own Gi for a trial class?

Sure, we have an Open Gi policy, so you can wear any color or brand you like and if you already have your own Gi great. If not we provide free trail Gi for the trail classes.

How fit do I need to be?

You don’t need to be super fit to start training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In fact, BJJ is a great way to get fit. At Atos Jiu-Jitsu academy everybody is welcome on the mats regardless of their level of fitness. We focus on technique and this is something absolutely anyone can do.

Do I need previous martial arts experience?

Not at all. If you have already trained in a different martial art that’s great but you do not need any previous martial arts experience. Regardless of whether you’re just starting out on your BJJ journey, or an old timer, you will always be welcome.

Am I too old?

No such thing. It’s never too late to start training BJJ. Our programs are designed to cater to everyone. All students are encouraged to train to their own limits and can push as hard as they want.

What is the right age for kids to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Every child is different. However we believe that around 4 years is a good age to start a martial art such as BJJ. Our kids program caters for 4-1 year olds and focuses on making self-defence and physical education fun. We use conditioning and skill-oriented games to engage and challenge kids. The benefits go way beyond the physical. It will also teach your kids valuable life skills such as courtesy, confidence, focus, discipline, team work, mental strength, and self-control.

Do I have to be strong to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

The beautiful thing about BJJ is the fundamental principle that a weaker and smaller person can defeat a stronger and heavier opponent using leverage and technique. Anybody with an open mind and a willingness to learn can train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

What if I am currently injured?

Depending on the nature of your injury there is a chance you can train around it. Have a chat with your professor to discuss options. Even if you have to sit out a few classes we still strongly encourage coming along to watch and learn.

What will I learn?

The primary focus of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is learning self-defence. We will teach you the fundamentals of self-defence, as well as the modern evolution of the martial art. You will practice a range of techniques from many different positions. You’ll also learn how to control resisting opponents on the ground, as well as how to apply submissions effectively.

What do I need to bring?

All you need for your first class is comfortable clothing. A fitted t-shirt or rash guard is ideal, and pocket less shorts are preferable for No Gi classes. For women tights and a top is fine. However, if you have a Jiu-Jitsu Kimono or ‘Gi’ feel free to wear that.

A water bottle and a small towel for drying off after the class is also a good idea.

Do I need any protective equipment?

Some students choose to wear a mouth guard when rolling. However, it’s entirely up to you.

Where do I buy my Gi?

We stock Gi’s from leading brands such as Braus, Hooks and Tatami.

I have a Gi but there are other club patches on them. Is this Ok?

This is no problem.

Do you welcome students from other academies?

100%. We’re focused on community, not competition. So everyone is welcome at Atos Jiu-Jitsu Townsville.

How often should I train?

This is really dependent on your lifestyle and your goals. You can train as little or as often as you like but to get the most benefit we recommend a minimum of twice a week.

How long does it take to grade?

This depends on a few different things. We pride ourselves on living the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle. Grading comes from the effort you put in on and off the mats.

Please note we do not charge for belt promotions.

How long does it take to get a blue belt?

When participating on a regular basis a blue belt generally takes 2-3 years to achieve. Again, this is really dependent on how committed you are, and how often you train.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

A black belt can take 10 years or more of hard work and consistent training to achieve.
