It doesn’t matter if you’re starting at 5 or 65, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu still has a lot to offer you and it’s never too late to start training. Whether you need a new hobby, want to loose weight, or just need a new way to challenge yourself physically and mentally BJJ is for you! Everyone has different goals when they start Jiu Jitsu, and different ways of getting there. The important thing is to enjoy the journey, and always be open to learning new things.
HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS FOR BJJ LONGEVITY:
- Pick a training schedule that works for you: Even if you can only make it 2 days a week, you will still see steady improvement. Try to stick to a consistent schedule but it’s still okay to change your schedule if your body needs rest. Some weeks you may be able to train every day, and other weeks you may need more rest. It’s all about balance and keeping your body healthy for the long haul. Know when you need rest, and when you’re just being lazy.
- Select training partners you trust: If you’re afraid they may injury you, then don’t roll with them. Pick training partners you are comfortable with and you trust. Upper belts tend to be the safer pick because they are more experienced and have better body mechanics.
- You don’t have to roll competitively: You determine the pace of the roll. If you don’t want to roll super competitively you don’t have to. A little ego is great because it will keep you coming back, but too much will likely be the cause of an injury. Make sure you keep your ego under check, and dial things back when you feel a need. It’s about longevity, not winning one round and then going into retirement.
- Remember that you have strengths as well: You may not be as athletic or strong as the young guys, but you are older and wiser. Young guys tend to rely on physical strength and athleticism, but that’s not the only way to win. Jiu Jitsu is like chess, and you must learn the underlying strategy. Train smarter and be technical. Also remember to take care of your body and take advantage of your recovery days.
